Neck Pain, Posture & Headaches Oh My!

I know we can all relate to this feeling… the one where a dull ache creeps up from your shoulders into your neck then into your head. You start reaching for your upper shoulder and neck to try to massage out some of that tension, but you’re other hand is already reaching for the over the counter meds because you just know a headache is coming your way. For many people, this isn’t a once-in-a-while annoyance, it’s a daily rhythm they’ve just learned to live with. But here’s the thing… YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT!

Tight muscles around your neck and shoulders are a common culprit behind tension headaches. Pair that with long hours sitting at a desk, scrolling on your phone, or training hard without giving your body time to recover, and your posture can start to take a hit. Over time, this can mean less mobility, more discomfort, and even premature wear and tear on your spine.

The good news? Small, consistent changes add up. Research shows that combining exercise, stretching, and chiropractic care doesn’t just decrease pain and headaches – it can also help restore energy, improve posture, and protect your spine for the long haul.

Why Should You Address This?

Chronic neck pain and headaches don’t just affect your body, they affect your life. Whether it’s enjoying your workouts, staying present with your kids, or simply winding down at night, discomfort and pain can rob you of the moments you love most.

But here’s the empowering truth: your body is adaptable. With the right tools, habits, and adjustments (no pun intended), you can make real changes.

  • Research consistently recommends a combination of chiropractic care, exercise, and stretching to reduce neck pain and improve function.
  • Chiropractic care has a sky-high satisfaction score – over 90% of patients report positive outcomes.
  • For acute neck pain, 85% of people who received chiropractic adjustments noticed significant improvements.

That’s more than just statistics, that’s hope and relief that there’s an end in sight to your annoying, painful headaches.

Next Steps (AKA: Dr. Stef’s Recommendation):

  1. Move it or lose it.
Take breaks often; especially if you work at a computer or a desk job all day. Pro Tip: Set an alarm on your phone every 60 minutes. When it goes off, stop what you’re doing and take 60 seconds to roll out your shoulders, stretch your neck, stand up, walk around, and basically give your spine a chance to reset.
  2. Add in targeted stretches and exercises.
A few minutes a day can reduce tension and retrain your posture. Here are my go-to’s for Firefly patients:
    • Cervical Retractions (“Chin Tucks”)
Sit tall and gently draw your chin straight back (like you’re making a double chin) without tilting your head up or down. Hold 3–5 seconds, repeat 10–15 times. This strengthens deep neck flexors and counteracts forward-head posture. My advice? Do this stretch when waiting at a red light. That way you can use your car’s head rest to let you know when you’ve pulled your head back far enough and you don’t have to take time out of your day.
    • T, W, Y, L Exercises
Lie face-down on the floor or over a stability ball. Using light weights (or no weights to start), form your arms into a T, then a W, then a Y, and finally an L. Move slowly and focus on squeezing your shoulder blades together, as if you’re trying to hold a ball in between your shoulder blades. These fire up your rotator cuff and postural muscles. Aim for 2–3 rounds of 8–12 reps.
    • Upper Trapezius Stretch
Sit tall. Gently tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear toward your shoulder. Hold for 10-20 seconds each side, repeat 2–3 times.
  3. Stay active.
Walking, strength training, and even short bursts of movement throughout your day can reduce tension and keep blood flowing to tired muscles. I love sitting on the couch all night as much as the next person, but staying stagnant isn’t going to help you feel better.
  4. Don’t forget your adjustments.
Chiropractic care restores movement in your spinal joints, reduces muscle tension, and gives your nervous system the reset it needs. Think of it as your body’s built-in performance and recovery hack. Pair it with muscle work and you’ve got a winning combo.
